With Ireland’s general election more than likely set for November 29th, the familiar face-to-face, door-to-door campaigning we’ve seen in past elections is running up against some big challenges.

Short days, wet November weather, and a condensed campaign window mean candidates have limited time to get out and connect in person.

This is where social media steps in – offering a powerful way for candidates to reach voters wherever they are, any time of day.

A Quick Campaign Calls for Fast Connections

The tight timeline means every day counts, and social media is the quickest way for candidates to stay visible and engage potential voters. Instead of waiting for the perfect weather or setting up traditional events, candidates can dive into Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even TikTok to connect. Social media lets them target specific age groups, interests, and regions, making sure their message reaches the right people.

Social Media’s Role in Ireland’s Recent Elections

Social media has already proven itself as a game-changer in Irish elections. Back in 2020, a massive 90% of Irish adults were active online, and social media spaces were buzzing with election conversations. For younger voters who might not always feel as connected to politics, social media helps bridge that gap, bringing political talk right to their feed. It’s a unique chance to engage people who might be on the fence about voting or haven’t really thought about the issues.

The Role of Social Media in Sharing Facts, Not Just Opinions

Social media isn’t just a platform for candidates to spread their message – it’s also a critical space for sharing reliable information. With so much information (and misinformation) flying around, social media has a big job to play in fact-checking and clarifying where candidates stand on key issues. Campaigns and organisations are working hard to share verified updates, keeping voters informed and engaged.

Why Your Vote Matters This Election

This November 29th, social media will play an enormous role in shaping Ireland’s election, but ultimately, it comes down to each of us doing our part.

If you’re eligible to vote and haven’t registered, there’s still time to make your voice heard.

The conversation is already happening online, so stay tuned, get informed, and make your vote count in shaping Ireland’s future.

You can Register to Vote here: https://checktheregister.ie/en-IE/

Social media marketing is constantly evolving, and as we look ahead to 2023, there are a number of trends that businesses should be paying attention to. In this blog post, I’ll explore some of the most important social media marketing trends for businesses in 2023.

Ephemeral content will continue to rise in popularity

Ephemeral content, such as Instagram Stories and Snapchat snaps, has been growing in popularity over the past few years, and this trend is set to continue in 2023. With so much content being produced every day, ephemeral content is a great way to create urgency and drive engagement. Businesses should focus on creating short, visually appealing content that is optimised for mobile devices.

Virtual reality will have an impact on social media

Virtual reality is becoming more accessible and affordable, and this will have an impact on social media in the coming years. Businesses should start thinking about how they can use virtual reality to create immersive experiences for their customers. For example, a furniture company could use virtual reality to let customers “try out” different sofas in their living room.

2. Video content will remain important

Video content has been growing in popularity for several years, and this trend is set to continue in 2023. Businesses should focus on creating high-quality video content that is optimised for social media. This could include explainer videos, product demos, and behind-the-scenes looks at the business.

3. Influencer marketing will evolve

Influencer marketing has been a popular tactic for many businesses in recent years, but in 2023, we can expect to see it evolve. Businesses should look for ways to work with micro-influencers, who have smaller followings but often have more engaged audiences. Additionally, businesses should focus on building long-term relationships with influencers, rather than just one-off campaigns.

4. Social commerce will become more prevalent

Social commerce, which allows customers to purchase products directly from social media platforms, is set to become more prevalent in 2023. Businesses should look for ways to make it easy for customers to purchase products directly from their social media profiles. This could include adding a “shop now” button to posts or creating shoppable Instagram posts.

In conclusion, businesses that want to succeed on social media in 2023 should focus on creating visually appealing, mobile-optimized content that is optimized for engagement. By staying on top of these trends, businesses can stay ahead of the competition and reach their target audience more effectively.

3. Targeted advertising

Social media platforms provide businesses with the ability to create highly targeted advertising campaigns. By using demographic and behavioural data, businesses can reach their ideal audience and achieve higher conversion rates.

4. Analytics and Insights

Social media platforms provide businesses with a wealth of data and insights about their audience, content, and advertising. By analysing this data, businesses can optimise their social media strategy and achieve better results.

To make the most of social media for business, it’s essential to create a well-planned and cohesive strategy that aligns with your overall marketing goals. Here are some tips to get started:

Choose the right platform

Each social media platform has its unique features and audience, making it important to choose the right platform for your business. Consider your target audience and the type of content you plan to create to determine which platforms are the best fit for your business.

2. Consistency is key

Posting regularly and consistently is essential for building a strong online presence. Determine a posting schedule that works for your business and stick to it. This will help build a loyal following and increase your reach.

TikTok videos are about to get longer. The app is now rolling out the ability for everyone to publish videos up to ten minutes in length, a massive increase on the current 3 min cap.

In the beginning TikTok videos were 15 seconds. They then increased to 60 seconds and then to 3 mins in July 2021. TikTok has been testing the change in length over the last few months and has now official launched the increase and will be slowly rolling this out globally over the next few weeks. This increase will see it as a direct competitor to YouTube.

Statement from TikTok: “We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok,” a spokesperson from TikTok said in a statement. “Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”

This increase in video length will allow for better brand videos such as instructional videos, cooking demos, educational content and beauty tutorials and many more.

So how do you get the increased video length? TikTok users will be notified when they’re able to upload 10-minute-long videos, as long as they’re running the latest app version.

Top Ten Tips on how to improve your business online from the comfort of your own home during Covid-19.

So you’re stuck at home. The novelty is probably wearing off by now and you’re looking for something to do. Even if you can’t do your actual work from home you can still do things to improve your business. Here are my Top Ten Tips on how you can increase your online presence from the couch.

Do exactly what I’m doing right now. Write a blog. Create a Top Ten Tips blog and offer some advice to your customers. Don’t have a website? No problem. Write an article on your LinkedIn account and share that to your other social media accounts.

Update your LinkedIn account. Do you have all your recent work experience and projects and skills listed? Have you asked your previous customers or clients for recommendations? More and more people will be browsing social media during this time. Now is the time to get on their radar and promote the fact that YOU are the expert in your field.

Update your Headshot. There are simple ways to improve your headshot until this passes and you can visit a professional photographer. Using a tripod set up the timer on your phones camera. Don’t have a tripod? Use an empty toilet roll with a slit in it. I’m sure there’s plenty to go around! Use table/floor lamps for lighting or use natural light from a window and a plain background. Contact Paula Malone Carty for more tips on how to get a good photograph from home.

Update your Facebook page and other social media platforms. Change out your Facebook cover or profile. Create a story. Use Canva to create the perfect sized graphics for your social media platforms. Look up Pixabay for free stock images that you can brand with your own logo.

Do a Live Q and A Session. Use Facebook Live or Google Hangouts and broadcast a live question and answer session for your customers. Use Facebook or EventBrite to create the event beforehand.

Run a training session online. Use Google Hangouts to share a presentation and create an online workshop. Set up the event using EventBrite and sell tickets to your online workshop to create some cashflow for the business.

Update the SEO of your website. If you have a WordPress website there are some easy things you can do to improve the search-ability of your website. Increasing the keywords on your pages as well as back links and metadata. Speak to an SEO expert such as Steve O’Conor of Webmarket.ie for more advice.

In this ever-changing world of Social Media it’s hard to keep up to date with the various image sizes for your business page. So here’s a quick guide to help you.

Facebook Profile Image

Every article I read says it should be 180px by 180px. However I always find it’s too pixelated and blurry for me. So I created mine at 300px by 300px and it was much better.

Facebook Cover

Your Facebook Cover should always be 820px by 312px. They take up such a huge part of your page so use it to showcase your business and highlight your USPs (Unique Selling Points).

If you want to make your page look even sexier why not go all out and add a Facebook Cover Video! This can something as simple as still images as a slideshow created in MovieMaker or iMovie or even PowerPoint. Or you could look at online video software such as Viddyoze. Keep in mind your cover video should be at least 820px by 312px and between 20 and 90 seconds.

Facebook Post

To share a simple image stick to 940px by 788px. Of course you can push the height and try going as far as 1200 to get that long extended image. Once you go over 1800px Facebook will start to crop the image however.

Facebook Link Image

Most good websites will have this image already pre-set. However if when you share a link the image is not correct or you’d like to create a different image for your link use 1200px by 628px.

Facebook Event Image

To get the most out of an event on Facebook be sure to create and upload the correct sized image. I see businesses on a weekly basis sharing events with the wrong image as their header. Don’t fall into this trap. Use 1920px by 1080px.

Facebook Stories

Facebook stories are not just for the ad-hoc style posts. They can be used to support whatever campaign you are currently running. Use well designed and branded stories to give your page an extra level of professionalism. The right size to use is 1080px by 1920px.

Everyone and their granny knows by now that the organic reach on Facebook has drastically reduced for businesses. But what does that actually mean in muggle terms? When you post something on your Facebook page ‘organically’ i.e. without paying for adverts or boosting, the amount of people that see it is very low. If you have 100 likes, you’re lucky to get an average reach of 6 people. Shocking!

Why?

Our Lord and Saviour Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook cares so much for their users that they will only display content in Newsfeeds that is of interest to the user. So if you’ve engaged with a page in the past, likes or comments, you are more inclined to see that page’s posts in your Newsfeed. What this means for business pages is we have to get that engagement increased first, or pay for it.

How?

Businesses need to reverse engineer the Facebook Algorithm and tricking it into thinking your page is popular. And the best way to do this at the beginning is by running a competition. Not just any competition however. You need to run a Lead Generating Competition using a specific keyword and a linked ChatBot.

So no, not your usual Like and Share.

Here are the key elements of any good competition and why you include them:

You need to get the scrollers attention so use large letters and emojis. You have about 4 seconds to get someones attention before they scroll down to another post.

Give the prize information straightaway. People are lazy. We want information fast. Don’t make them read a paragraph about your business before seeing what they could win. Tell them immediately.

Give clear instructions as to how to enter and how and when the winner will be announced.

Ask for a Like on the post, not the page. The users viewing the post may already like the page. Also page likes are too hard to police in terms of who actually entered the competition. Ask them to Like the post instead. When someone likes your post you get engagement but you can also then further invite them to Like your page if they haven’t already done so.

Ask for a comment with a keyword. This is where it gets fun. Use a chatbot such as ManyChat to automate your post messages. Use your competition post to gather leads so you can retarget them in the future.

Ask for a tag. By doing this you’re getting the user to do the work for you. Sharing is great BUT you’re not guaranteed people will see the shared post or act on it. A tag however creates a notification and people are more likely to check their notifications.

Facebook users are generally not aware that it is against Facebook regulations to ask for any kind of interaction on the platform as part of a competition. However I have yet to see Facebook penalise a page for doing so. But just in case, I will never ask for a Share as part of a competition entry requirement. Instead I’ll say something like ‘P.S. We’d love a Share’. facebook users are now so conditioned to Liking and Sharing competitions that they’ll do it anyway. But by not specifically asking for it you cover your ass. :)

Always use a great graphic without too much text. You don’t want to overload the users with information but you want to grab their attention so use a high quality branded image, something related to the prize.

Statistically Facebook users are more inclined to share from 3pm Wednesday onwards. We’re happier towards the end of the week and so we’ll browse Facebook more and share positivity amongst our connections. So post you competition on a Wednesday and only run it for one week.

Share links to your competition and talk about it on your other platforms. Add a link to your weekly email. Create a Story to share on Facebook and Instagram. Use Canva to create the perfect branded image for your story.

Competitions are a great way of getting that organic reach and engagement up. Make sure then to post a sales post soon after to capitalise on the reach. Don’t let it go to waste.

I have been running competition campaigns for clients for literally years. I have tried and tested a lot of different strategies but the above has always worked the best.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.

A recent study shows a steady decline in female participation in the higher ranks of management with just 14 per cent of chief executive roles in Irish companies being held by women.

Unless you live under a rock, you’ll understand that women talk. We share our insecurities, our dreams, our problems. Sit with a woman on a plane for a few hours and by the end of it you’ll probably know her form of birth control.

With the growth of this freelancing society we now live in and increased access to fast broadband, more and more women are realising their dreams; setting up businesses and creating working hours to suit their family lives.

Starting out as a woman in business can be very daunting. One of the many issues women in business face is simply not being taken seriously by our male counterparts. We’re either branded as ‘bossy’ or ‘bitchy’ if we’re demanding or ‘weak’ if we don’t stand up for ourselves. A woman must work extra hard to be heard in the business world. So sourcing the right advice can be like tying to find a needle on a table of poker playing men surrounded by cigar smoke.

But there are women who have been immensely successful in this battle and have broken through the glass ceiling. It is invaluable for women to network with their peers, to come together and discuss common issues. By listening to each other at networking events advice is given, contacts are made and women leave feeling inspired, hopefully with a few more likeminded friends too.

It’s not about who you know, but who knows you!

A key trait of any successful leader is the ability to share experiences and learn from others. Ask any successful person which skill helped to them to succeed and the majority will say Networking. Networking events help women to find role models and connections that would not necessarily be available to them from within their own office (or from the kitchen table).

So get out from behind that desk and join us for the Women’s Empowerment Summit 26th March in the Talbot Hotel Stillorgan. This event is designed to help you be the best you can be, to learn from other successful women in business and to leave with a feeling of empowerment, ready to take on the world.

Speakers include:

Sile Seoige – TV Broadcaster

Donna Kennedy – (Bestselling Author & Psychologist)

Louise Phelan (Vice President of PayPal)

Pat Falvey (Mt Everest Climber & Entrepreneur)

Susan Dolan (Google Consult)

Katie Maloney (CEO Her.ie)
